Luc Fusaro, a French engineering and design student who does not work for Nike or any other shoe company, is creating a 3-D-printed running shoe. It’s revolutionary, but he’s hoping it barely affects runners at all. To be precise (and maybe optimistic), the shoes—branded “Designed to Win”—could shave 3.5 percent off a runner’s time. That’s it. But in the professional running world, that’s the difference between Olympic glory and heading home in defeat.

“I’ll never forget the day Marilyn and I were walking around New York City, just having a stroll on a nice day. She loved New York because no one bothered her there like they did in Hollywood, she could put on her plain-jane clothes and no one would notice her. She loved that. So as we we’re walking down Broadway, she turns to me and says ‘Do you want to see me become her?’ I didn’t know what she meant but I just said ‘Yes’- and then I saw it. I don’t know how to explain what she did because it was so very subtle, but she turned something on within herself that was almost like magic. And suddenly cars were slowing and people were turning their heads and stopping to stare. They were recognizing that this was Marilyn Monroe as if she pulled off a mask or something, even though a second ago nobody noticed her. I had never seen anything like it before.” - Amy Greene, wife of Marilyn’s personal photographer Milton Greene

Leanie van der Vyver’s “Scary Beautiful”

Fabricated by Rene van den Berg

Photography by Lyall Coburn.

Unlike a conventional pair of high-heels, the front of each shoe is more elevated than the back. The wearer must place their pointed toes into the heel, then lean forward to rest their shins on the front of the shoe, which is reinforced with a carbon-fibre rod.

The only way to walk wearing the shoes is with bent knees and a shrugged posture.

Leather envelops the outer body of each shoe, while the insides are lined with soft leather that covers a supporting layer of  orthopaedic memory foam.

Van der Vyver worked with shoe designer René van den Berg to create the pieces for her final project at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, based on the idea that “people are never satisfied with how they look”. She claims that “beauty is currently at an all time climax” and explains that this project was an exploration of “what lies beyond perfection”.

These photographs show a human botfly being surgically removed from a boy’s eyeball. Female botflies capture mosquitoes and attach their eggs to the mosquitoes body. They then release it. Eventually the mosquito makes its way to an animal and bites it, inserting the eggs while it feeds on the blood. The eggs then gestate under the skin and hatch as a larva. The larvae develop within the subcutaneous layers for up to eight weeks before they drop out and pupate beneath the soil. This is one of the only known examples of a botfly infecting a human eye. The case study was first published in the July 2000 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology, and explains: “A 5-YEAR-OLD boy with inferior orbital swelling and an erythematous mass arising from the inferior cul-de-sac of his right eye (Figure 1 and Figure 2 to the right) was seen by an Air Force Mobile Ophthalmic Surgical Team working in a rural area of the Republic of Honduras. The respiratory pore of a late-stage larva of the human botfly (Dermatobia hominis) was located in the anterior orbit. The larva was gently removed under general anesthesia through a small incision in the conjunctiva (Figure 3, Figure 4, and Figure 5 to the right).”
